Please
take care of your brushes. They will last for many, many
years if properly washed and stored. Here are a few tips:
- Never
leave your brushes sitting in water. Use a water basin
with stations for rinsing and propping.
- Always
clean your brushes thoroughly at the end of your painting
session with soap and water. Consider following up with
brush cleaner. Invest in a heart shaped Loew Cornell grooming
pad. You will be amazed at what a nice job this very inexpensive
tool does.
- Always
store your brushes in an upright position so the bristles
remain straight.
- When
basecoating resin items, use an old or lower priced brush
to start. The texture on resin tends to "chew"
up the bristles.
- Fan
brushes are an excellent tool for antiquing. They will
get the antiquing mixture in the cracks and crevices easily.
- Have
a dedicated brush for applying varnishes. Wash and groom
immediately after using.
- Always
use the appropriate size brush for the job. Don't be afraid
of larger brushes. Many times I find my students use the
smallest size round brush to apply the basecoat on a santa's
coat when a medium sized flat sized brush will do the
job without lines and faster!
